In the most anticipated final in years a record crowd came to see Down take on the champions Kerry.
Both teams did not disappoint but it was a scintillating Down side that were by far the better team and inflicted the greatest All Ireland defeat on The Kingdom.
Down lead by just 2 points at the break and Kerry soon levelled after the restart. A goal by James Mc Cartan and a penalty by Paddy Doherty soon after finished the Kerry men and Sam Maguire was on his way over the border for the first time to the Mountains of Mourne.
